INVISIBLE REINFORCEMENT FOR KING EDWARD BRIDGE

Work to reinforce the approach arches to King Edward Bridge in Tyneside got underway this week (2 January). Network Rail is investing £1.5million to reinforce the ten masonry arches on the approach to the bridge on the Newcastle side of the river. Because it is a Grade 2 listed structure none of the work will be visible externally once it is complete but the new concrete lining will reinforce the arches, prolonging the life of the structure. Tenants with businesses in the arches are being relocated during the works, which should be completed by late summer 2007. Richard Bell, Territory Civil Engineer at Network Rail said: “As custodian of the railway infrastructure, Network Rail is responsible for the maintenance of many important structures. We will ensure that all works on King Edward Bridge are in keeping with the original structure while at the same time preserving it for future generations”.
