INVESTMENT IN HULL - SCARBOROUGH RAIL LINE CONTINUES

Region & Route:
Around 4.3 miles of track is being renewed by Network Rail between Driffield and Bridlington at half term. The work, which is worth around £1.25m will see the old track being replaced with continuously welded rail between 10 and 17 February. Rail services will be replaced with buses on these dates. Neil Henry, area general manager for Network Rail, said: “We have planned carefully to minimise disruption and will be providing a mini bus to take pedestrians around the diversionary route when the level crossing is shut." "This scheme will have long-term benefits for everyone who uses the line. Passengers will notice a smoother, quieter ride as jointed track is replaced with continuous lengths of rail, there will be less wear and tear on the trains and the new track. It is all part of the ongoing project to renew the railway on the Hull to Scarborough line." Steve Butcher, area director, Northern Rail said: “Our customers will see real benefits to their journeys as a result of this work. “We’ve worked closely with local authorities to ensure that while these improvements are taking place we have a robust bus replacement service to keep customers on the move.” The work is being carried out at half term in order to minimise the disruption to regular commuters. Passengers needing service information should contact National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
