Improvement works to affect services between Rhyl and Llandudno for one weekend
- Region & Route:
- Wales & Western: Wales & Borders
Network Rail is carrying out essential improvement works on the railway between Rhyl and Llandudno over the weekend of Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May.
As part of ongoing commitment to maintain and improve the railway network across Wales and Borders, as well as maximising opportunities to undertake multiple tasks in the same area to save time and reduce duplication, the work will include surveying, general maintenance, replacement of rails, sleepers, and track stone between Abergele and Pensarn, and Colwyn Bay.
To allow this work to take place safely, replacement bus services will operate between Rhyl and Llandudno Junction throughout the weekend. Passengers are advised to check their journey in advance and allow extra time for travel, particularly if you are planning to use the following services:
Avanti West Coast:
- Saturday 17 May: Services between London Euston and Holyhead will only operate between Euston and Chester. Rail replacement services will operate between Chester and Llandudno.
- Sunday 18 May: Services to Chester and North Wales will only run between London Euston and Crewe as a result of engineering works in the Trent Valley. Standby vehicles will be provided at Rhyl and Llandudno to supplement the TfW bus replacement operating between these two stations.
Transport for Wales:
- Buses will replace trains between Rhyl and Llandudno Junction for the full weekend.
- Services between Llandudno Junction and Llandudno, Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Holyhead will continue to run as normal.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of all passengers while we carry out these important works to maintain the safety and reliability of the railway.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
