Improvement work at Metheringham level crossing

Region & Route:

Improvement work will be taking place at Blankney level crossing on the B1189 (Station Rd/ Moor Ln) in Metheringham starting this weekend, in preparation for a full upgrade later in the year

As part of the GNGE project to improve the railway from Peterborough to Doncaster via Lincoln, Network Rail is making improvements to level crossings on the route to enhance safety, particularly as the upgrade of the line allows for faster, quieter and more frequent rail traffic.

The work at Metheringham will include re-profiling of the highway and demolishing the building on the corner of the level crossing. The crossing gates will be removed and replaced with modern, lifting barriers later in the year.

Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail said: “We are upgrading the level crossing at Metheringham as part of our work to improve the GNGE line. Once completed, the old crossing gates will be replaced with lifting, modern barriers and warning systems of the highest safety standards.

“To complete the work we need to widen the road and undertake ground work which means the road will be closed to vehicles. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank local people for their patience during the works.”

The road closure will affect the area between the entrance to Metheringham station and the entrance to Moorland Industrial Park, starting at 8pm on Friday 5 October and finishing at 6.30am on Monday 21 October. During this period there will be no access over the crossing for vehicles with a diversionary route in place.

Train services will not be affected.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
