IMPROVED CANOPIES AT HARROGATE STATION

Region & Route:
Passengers using Harrogate Station are enjoying an improved lighter and brighter environment thanks to a £110,000 Network Rail scheme to renovate the station canopies.  Work began in November 2004 to renew the canopies above platform one and the main entrance.   Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “A key part of our role is to maintain safety and ensure our stations are fit for purpose.  Harrogate is one of a number of stations where Network Rail is carrying out a mix of maintenance and renewal across the rail network.” The existing platform one canopy was in poor condition with cracked and missing glazing panels. The steel canopy supports were suffering from surface corrosion.  The glazing panels were replaced and the surface corrosion removed from the supporting steelwork.  The steelwork was repainted to match the existing station colour scheme. A new roof cover and enhanced drainage system was installed on the main entrance concrete canopy, which was suffering from rain water damage.  Network Rail and contractor C Spencer Ltd carried out the work with minimum disruption to passengers using the station.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
