HULL KIDS GET THE NO MESSIN’! MESSAGE

Region & Route:
Over 1000 young people in Hull took part in the No Messin’! Live two-day activity extravaganza on 25 and 26 July. The event showcased a number of activities from climbing to arts and crafts.  The aim was to show young people that there are better things to do than mess about on the railway tracks.  And the message appears to be hitting home.  British Transport Police figures show that during the week of the No Messin’! Live event there was only one reported case of trespass, by an adult, on the railway in Hull.  This compares to 12 reported cases of trespass and vandalism in the same week the previous year. Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “With No Messin’! Live we want to give young people the opportunity to try a variety of activities that are on offer in their local area and develop new or existing skills. There are better and safer things to do rather than messing about on the railway tracks.  “These figures are very encouraging, although we will not be complacent.  No Messin’! is part of a wider rail industry campaign to tackle railway crime.  As well as continuing with our education programme in schools, from September we will resume work with Hull City FC Football in the Community and the British Wrestling Foundation in the Hull area.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
