HOYLAKE RAIL LINE IMPROVEMENTS

Region & Route:

Network Rail is investing £760,000 in improving the rail line between Hoylake and West Kirby in the run up to the Easter bank holiday.

A total of 4,000 yards of new rail will be laid on 2,500 new sleepers which in turn will be embedded in 5,700 tones of new ballast (the grey stone chippings that the track sits on).

The project will replace life expired jointed track with new continuously welded rail resulting in a smoother and quieter ride for passengers and less wear and tear on both the tracks and trains. It will also mean the end of the familiar ‘clickerty-clack’ as the trains pass along the tracks.

To allow the work to take place train services between West Kirby and Birkenhead North will be replaced by buses from Monday 17 until start of service on Monday 24 March.

During the work Station Road level crossing at Hoylake station will be closed from midday on Saturday 22 until the early hours of Monday 24 March.

All the work is due to be completed in time for train services to run again from Easter Monday.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
