Grand Central at 80% as White Company leads the way
- Region & Route:
As the shape of Grand Central starts to make its mark on the Birmingham city skyline, the leasing is also gaining momentum, with The White Company, L’Occitane, Kiehls and a wide range of restaurants now exchanged.
The news that 80% of floor space in the shopping centre is already signed, or under offer, is accompanied by the announcement that Grand Central, to be situated directly above the stunning rejuvenated New Street station, will open in 2015.
Leasing Director for Grand Central Keith Stone says: “We are delighted with the significant progress we are making. The Grand Central offer will have a hugely positive impact on the city’s retail attraction and will bring in much new spend and new customers. With over 50 million people a year visiting Grand Central and the Station, we will have some of the highest pedestrian flows in the country. To have nearly 80% signed or under offer at this stage is a great endorsement of the project. The commitment of premium retailers such as White Company, L’Occitane and Kiehls and the overwhelming demand for the restaurants and cafes from some truly great brands heralds the prospective success of this new retail destination in the heart of the city.”
One of the first retailers to exchange is The White Company with a 4,150 sq ft store in the scheme.
This is the first stand alone store in the city for The White Company, heralded as one of the UK’s fastest-growing, award-winning multi-channel retailers, and will enable them to showcase a more comprehensive product range to West Midlands customers than has previously been possible.
The White Company Head of Property Sarah King says: ‘Grand Central was the obvious choice for our first stand alone store in Birmingham, being located at the heart of the city’s retail offer, with such a strong anchor, and alongside other premium brands that will be new to the city. We are most impressed with the project which will have a significant impact on shopping patterns in the city centre.”
Virtually all available restaurants and cafes are now signed up or under offer. First to exchange and making their debut in the city with a Grand Central Birmingham offer are: Vietnamese restaurant Pho, the Mexican and Spanish brands Tortilla and Tapas Revolution, Fuel juice bar, Crepe Affaire and Caffe Concerto. They will join Yo! Sushi, Giraffe and Carluccios, who will be opening their largest Birmingham restaurant within the scheme.
Speaking about their first offering outside London and the South East, Pho MD, Stephen Wall says: “Since opening London’s first Vietnamese street food restaurant in Clerkenwell in 2005, we have expanded with a further 6 restaurants in London, and one in Brighton. In moving out into the regions, Grand Central Birmingham was the ideal location for us – a visionary design and great central location, plus the vibrancy of the view over the busiest rail concourse outside London all makes a great setting.”
It is expected that the exact opening date for Grand Central will be confirmed in early 2014 once the project’s key engineering milestones have been achieved.
Chris Montgomery, Network Rail project director said: “The redevelopment of New Street station and Grand Central will provide a world class transport and retail hub for the people of the West Midlands and beyond and when Grand Central opens, many customers will be coming into the city for the first time in many years.
“We want to deliver an experience that surpasses all their expectations. Having reviewed how the centre and the station will work alongside each other, we’re confident that a more aligned opening in 2015 will allow customers to experience the full impact of the stunning open atrium design from day one .”

EDITOR’S NOTES
The decision to open in 2015 has been reached by the Grand Central project partners, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail. Since the opening of the first part of the new station concourse in April 2013, it has been possible to develop a much clearer picture about how the construction programme will progress over the next 12 - 18 months including a number of key engineering milestones to be achieved in the early part of next year for the surrounding New Street station redevelopment which interfaces with Grand Central.
Whilst there was a possibility that Grand Central may have opened for Christmas 2014, further clarity on the construction programme has informed the decision to open both the new shopping destination and the station in 2015. Opening the shopping centre more closely with the completed station concourse will provide a better customer experience for the whole development than if Grand Central had opened earlier.
Opening 2015 to synchronise more closely with completion of the station concourse, Grand Central Birmingham will bring a full line John Lewis, over 40 new premium and high quality shops and nearly 20 restaurants and cafes to the city. Grand Central will be integrated with the world class New Street Station at the heart of the City’s retail offer.
Grand Central Birmingham key facts
- Nearly ½ million sq ft of shopping and dining
- Anchored by full line 250,000 sq ft John Lewis, largest outside London
- Strong home and technology offer
- An additional 200,000 sq ft, bringing:
- Over 40 premium quality fashion and lifestyle retailers
- Nearly 20 cafes and restaurants
- Further retail and dining opportunities at Concourse level – 60,000 sq ft
Overall regeneration of New Street station
- The project is backed by Birmingham City Council, Department for Transport, Network Rail and Centro and will be delivered by Network Rail alongside its delivery partner Mace.
- It’s a £600 million project for the regeneration of the station, with a further £150 million investment in the transformation of the Pallasades into Grand Central Birmingham.
- • By 2015, New Street will be transformed into a 21st century transport hub, delivering:
- a light, bright concourse with better facilities and 3.5 times more space
- easier access to platforms with new lifts and escalators
- new entrances, better connecting the station and the Metro extension from Snow Hill station
- new public space and improved pedestrian links across the city, stimulating regeneration
- To allow New Street station to remain open to passengers, the project will be completed in two phases with most of the work happening behind the scenes:
- Phase 1 saw the first half of the new station concourse constructed offline next door to the existing station, which opened to passengers on 28 April 2013 when work switched to developing the existing station
- Phase 2 will see the construction of the new John Lewis department store adjacent to the station.
- The whole Project completes in 2015.
- The construction programme is extremely complex, both in terms of maintaining a fully functioning transport hub throughout the development works and also in terms of refurbishing a 1906s building.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
