GLAZING THE ROOF AT HULL

Region & Route:
Passengers at Hull will be seeing the station in a whole new light after Network Rail completed work to renew the imposing seven barrels that form the station roof. Constructed in 1847 the Victorian structure is made up of three barrels covering the tracks and platforms, two above the car park and a further two over the concourse. The £2.5 million project, funded by Network Rail with contributions from First Transpennine Express, Hull Trains and the Railway Heritage Trust, began in November 2004.  Although the barrels over the car park (glass reinforced plastic) and the concourse (glass) were renewed on a like for like basis, the barrels over the tracks were enhanced from glass reinforced plastic to glass. Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “Stations are the gateway to the rail network.  The new barrels have helped brighten the station making it a much more pleasant environment for passengers.” "The new glazing has made a real difference to the station, which is much lighter and brighter with a more welcoming atmosphere," said Dean Lancaster, TransPennine Express station manager. Around two million passengers use Hull Paragon station each year.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
