£975,000 improvement to Stockport station

A £975,000 project to improve four platforms at Stockport station is nearing completion.

Work started to improve and resurface the southern ends of platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4 in November 2016. Once finished, by the end of August 2017, passengers will benefit from resurfaced, safer areas as well as improved lighting at both ends of all four platforms.

Jim Syddall, Network Rail’s programme director, said: “These relatively small improvements will have a big impact for passengers as they improve both passenger experience and safety when catching longer trains which increasingly call at Stockport station.

“It was a challenge for Network Rail engineers to complete this work as each night they have to build a temporary road across the tracks between the platforms to remove waste and bring new materials in – and then remove it in time for the first train service the each day.”

Ann Coffey, MP for Stockport said: “I welcome this improvement for the safety of passengers when catching the longer trains at Stockport, as part of an ongoing programme of improvements to the station.”
