Flint railway station now has step-free access in major boost for accessibility

Region & Route:
Wales & Western: Wales & Borders

Rail passengers in Flint now have step-free access between platforms with a brand-new lift, delivered as part of a £5.5m accessibility upgrade.

The new lifts were officially opened on Thursday 2 October by Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, who joined Network Rail, Transport for Wales, Councillor Russ Davies Mayor of Flint, Councillor Norma Davies Mayoress of Flint, Hannah Blythyn MS for Delyn and local stakeholders, this week, to mark the occasion.

Funded through the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme, and delivered by contractor AmcoGiffen, the project also included a range of wider improvements:

  • Installation of new tactiles and emergency refuge points on platforms.
  • Car park reconfiguration to ensure accessible spaces close to the drop-off point.
  • Upgraded station lighting.
  • Repositioning of the landmark foot sculpture, which marks a key access point for the National Cycle Network in   Wales.

The investment means any passenger who finds steps a barrier now have an accessible option between platforms 1 and 2. It also completes a significant section of step-free travel along the North Wales Coast, with every station served by Avanti West Coast, between Holyhead and London, now offering accessible interchange.

Emma Osborn Passenger Strategy Director, Network Rail Wales and Borders said, “Making our railway more accessible is one of the most important things we can do. Step-free access benefits everyone - disabled people, those travelling with children, passengers carrying luggage - simply making it an easier journey for all.

“At Flint, we’re proud to have delivered this multi-million-pound transformation safely, and in partnership with the Department for Transport, Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, AmcoGiffen and Flintshire County Council - another step towards a simpler, better, greener railway.”

Adrian Carrington, Head of Station infrastructure for Transport for Wales said,“Improving accessibility is at the heart of our commitment to delivering a truly inclusive transport network for all of Wales. This new lift at Flint station, along with a range of enhancements, ensures that all our customers can travel more easily and confidently.

“This upgrade removes a key barrier between platforms for those with reduced mobility and will help make travel more seamless for everyone.”

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said, “It’s great to be here in Flint to see the improvements to the station.  These will make using the train easier for all, encouraging more people to use public transport.  We continue to work closely with the UK Government to support the Access for All programme, including our match-funding commitment for Access for All schemes at Shotton and Ruabon.”

Stephen Lloyd, AmcoGiffen Senior Projects Manager said, “We’re proud to have delivered this new accessible station as part of the wider investment programme supporting step-free travel and enhancing passenger experience across the region. Working collaboratively with Transport for Wales and Network Rail, we’ve completed the project safely and with a shared focus on creating long-term benefits for passengers and the community.”

The accessibility upgrades at Flint station follow a series of improvements by Transport for Wales (TfW) - including refurbished facilities, new customer information screens and landscaping, supported by £90,000 from the Railway Heritage Trust. In addition, a disused building has been transformed into two community rooms and a staff room as part of TfW’s Social and Commercial Development Plan.

Bellach mae gan deithwyr rheilffordd yn y Fflint fynediad heb risiau rhwng platfformau oherwydd lifft newydd sbon a osodwyd fel rhan o waith uwchraddio hygyrchedd gwerth £5.5 miliwn.

Agorwyd y lifft yn swyddogol yr wythnos hon gan Ken Skates, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Ogledd Cymru a Thrafnidiaeth, a ymunodd â Network Rail, Trafnidiaeth Cymru, Cynghorydd  Russ Davies Maer y Fflint, Cynghorydd Norma Davies Maeres y Fflint, Hannah Blythyn AoS Delyn a rhanddeiliaid lleol i ddathlu’r achlysur.

Cafodd y prosiect ei ariannu gan raglen Mynediad i Bawb yr Adran Drafnidiaeth a’i gyflawni gan y contractiwr AmcoGiffen. Roedd y gwaith hefyd yn cynnwys ystod o welliannau ehangach:

  • Gosod palmentydd botymog newydd a mannau llochesu mewn argyfwng ar blatfformau.
  • Ail-lunio’r maes parcio er mwyn cynnwys lleoedd parcio hygyrch yn agos i’r man gollwng.
  • Uwchraddio goleuadau’r orsaf.
  • Ail-leoli’r cerflun nodedig o droed sy’n nodi mynediad allweddol i’r Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol yng Nghymru.

Mae’r buddsoddiad yn golygu bod gan unrhyw deithiwr y mae grisiau’n rhwystr iddo opsiwn hygyrch rhwng platfformau 1 a 2. Mae hefyd yn cwblhau darn sylweddol o’r daith heb risiau ar hyd arfordir gogledd Cymru. Mae pob gorsaf a wasanaethir gan Avanti West Coast rhwng Caergybi a Llundain yn cynnig cyfnewidfa heb risiau bellach.

Dywedodd Emma Osborn, Cyfarwyddwr Strategaeth i Deithwyr Network Rail Cymru a’r Gororau, “Mae gwneud ein rheilffordd yn hygyrch yn un o’r pethau pwysicaf y gallwn ni ei wneud. Mae mynediad heb risiau o fudd i bawb – pobl anabl, y rhai sy’n teithio gyda phlant, teithwyr sy’n cario bagiau. Mae’n gwneud y daith yn haws i bawb.

“Yn y Fflint, rydym yn falch o fod wedi cyflawni’r gwaith trawsnewidiol hwn, sy’n werth miliynau o bunnoedd, yn ddiogel, mewn partneriaeth â’r Adran Drafnidiaeth, Llywodraeth Cymru, Trafnidiaeth Cymru, AmcoGiffen a Chyngor Sir y Fflint. Mae’n gam arall tuag at reilffordd symlach, well a gwyrddach.”

Dywedodd Adrian Carrington, Pennaeth Seilwaith Gorsafoedd Trafnidiaeth Cymru, “Mae gwella hygyrchedd wrth galon ein hymrwymiad i gyflenwi rhwydwaith trafnidiaeth gwirioneddol gynhwysol i Gymru gyfan. Mae’r lifft newydd hwn yng ngorsaf y Fflint, ynghyd ag ystod o welliannau, yn sicrhau y bydd ein holl gwsmeriaid yn gallu teithio’n rhwyddach ac yn hyderus.

“Mae’r gwaith diweddaru hwn yn dileu rhwystr allweddol rhwng y platfformau i’r rhai â llai o symudedd, a bydd yn helpu i wneud teithio’n fwy esmwyth i bawb.”

Dywedodd Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Ogledd Cymru a Thrafnidiaeth, Ken Skates, “Mae’n wych bod yma yn y Fflint i weld y gwelliannau i’r orsaf. Bydd yn haws i bawb ddefnyddio’r trên o’u herwydd, a byddant yn annog mwy o bobl i ddefnyddio trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus. Rydym yn parhau i weithio’n agos â Llywodraeth y DU i gefnogi rhaglen Mynediad i Bawb, gan gynnwys ein hymrwymiad i roi arian cyfatebol i gynlluniau Mynediad i Bawb yn Shotton a Rhiwabon.”

Mae’r gwaith diweddaru hygyrchedd yng ngorsaf y Fflint yn dilyn cyfres o welliannau gan Drafnidiaeth Cymru (TrC) – gan gynnwys cyfleusterau wedi’u hadnewyddu, sgriniau gwybodaeth newydd i gwsmeriaid a thirweddu, gyda chymorth gwerth £90,000 gan Ymddiriedolaeth Treftadaeth y Rheilffyrdd. Yn ogystal, cafodd adeilad gwag ei drawsnewid yn ddwy ystafell gymunedol ac ystafell i’r staff, fel rhan o Gynllun Datblygu Cymdeithasol a Masnachol TrC.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
