The station footbridge was in need of a revamprefurbishment as there was considerable corrosion to the lattice steelwork, particularly that which supported the bridge decking, although the brick piers are sound., sStructural repairs were made to both staircases, new dual height handrails were fixed in position and non-corrosive anti-slip stair treads were installed. All the decking was replaced and coated covered with a corroless protective coating. The new main span was manufactured and coated off site. The new main span, which was manufactured off site, was lifted onto the existing brick piers on spread footingsin the same way, and from the start of lifting out the old bridge to lowering in the new took just under four and a half hours. The main span is 9,269m measured square from pier to pier. Photographs highlight the new span being tack welded to the existing staircase. The works were undertaken in a safe Guarded Green Zone, and from lifting the old section out and replacing the new took only 4 hours 20 minutes. About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
