- Region & Route:
- North West & Central
London Euston station is on track to recycle over 1,500 tonnes of waste over a twelve month period*, helping to reduce the station’s carbon footprint and supporting Network Rail’s commitment to sustainability.
To mark Global Recycling Day on Tuesday 18 March, Euston is celebrating its progress, as well as encouraging passengers and colleagues to continue supporting its recycling efforts.
The station’s dedicated waste management facility is operated by Network Rail’s partners at Mitie and processes all waste generated at the station. Ensuring that recyclable materials are separated and repurposed efficiently is helping with a reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill.
The Network Rail and Mitie partnership has achieved some impressive results over the past couple of years:
- A 71% boost in recycling rates at Euston station.
- A 70% reduction in waste collections, saving time, resources, and emissions.
- CO₂ savings of 11,242.4 tonnes annually, contributing to the UK’s sustainability goals.
- Generating revenue from saleable recycled materials, offsetting the costs of staffing at the recycling centre.
- Created ten full time positions at Mitie.
Robert Williamson, head of stations and passenger experience at London Euston station, said: “Our waste management facility is continuing to make a real difference in improving recycling rates and reducing our environmental impact here at Euston.
“Global Recycling Day is the perfect opportunity to reflect on our latest recycling stats and I want to say a huge thanks to our waste management team at Mitie who work tirelessly every day, as well as our passengers for their support in helping us make the station greener.”
Samuel Omojola, operations manager for Mitie Transport, cleaning & hygiene services at London Euston station, said: “Partnering with Network Rail at London Euston has allowed us to transform waste management into a powerful tool for sustainability. Our innovative facility not only boosts recycling rates but also reflects our commitment to driving positive environmental change.
"On Global Recycling Day, we’re proud to celebrate these achievements and inspire greater environmental responsibility in the railway industry.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
