Euston station champions women in rail for International Women’s Day

Region & Route:
North West & Central

Railway colleagues at London Euston station and across the West Coast Main Line are celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on Saturday 8 March 2025, by spotlighting the achievements of women working in rail operations.

This year’s IWD theme, #AccelerateAction, calls for a more inclusive world where diversity is valued and celebrated. As part of this, a series of posters are being displayed at Euston station and videos are being shared across social media, introducing some of the inspiring women who help keep the railway running smoothly. Featuring portrait photos and personal quotes, these stories will highlight their contributions, experiences, and the progress being made towards greater gender equality in the rail industry.

As part of the campaign, interviewees shared insights about their careers, experiences in the rail industry, and advice for women looking to follow in their footsteps.

This celebration also aligns with Railway 200, a year-long recognition of 200 years of railway history, highlighting the people who keep Britain moving and encouraging the next generation to be part of its future. While traditionally a male-dominated sector, the railway industry is evolving, and Network Rail aims to showcase the incredible women working in operational roles in Euston station and across the West Coast Main Line.

On Saturday 8 March, railway colleagues will be at Euston station distributing copies of the book My Mummy is a Train Driver, generously donated by London Northwestern Railway. This beautifully crafted children’s book challenges stereotypes and showcases the vital role of women in the rail industry. By sharing these stories, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women in rail - past, present, and future - while encouraging young minds to see themselves in all careers.

Amanda Webster-Uz, Network Rail’s head of Euston station operations said:
“International Women’s Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women working across the rail industry. At Euston, we are proud of the talented women in our teams who play a vital role in keeping passengers and freight moving every day. By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire more women to consider a career in rail and show that this industry really is open to everyone.”

Kerryann Clark, London Northwestern Railway’s area station manager for Euston station, said: “We’re excited to partner with Network Rail this International Women’s Day to promote inclusion in the rail industry. For those travelling with young children, station staff will be handing out copies of the book ‘My Mummy is a Train Driver’ by Kerrine and Jason Bryan. We are proud to have played a part in the production of this children’s book, which challenges stereotypes and shows the rail industry is open to all.”

Jo MacPhail, people director at Avanti West Coast said: "It is critical for women who are thinking about a career in the rail industry to know that the railway is one of the best industries they could possibly choose for their career. The variety of roles combined with a wide range of training opportunities means I am confident that anyone who wants to develop and learn whilst building their career will be pleased they made the choice to join.

"We're delighted to have joined our industry partners to showcase these wonderful career stories from colleagues in rail, and we hope it continues to encourage more women to apply for all the types of roles we have across the railway".

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
