DERBY STATION LETS THE SUNSHINE IN

Region & Route:

Work has started on the final stage of completely transforming the platforms at Derby station. Passengers are already enjoying new light, airy and spacious platforms. Three quarters of the work has been completed whilst keeping the station open and trains running as normal.

Work started in February 2008 to completely demolish and replace the old heavy and dark canopies with light modern ones. New stairs have been built, new lifts installed, light comfortable waiting rooms built with brand new toilets and staff rooms. The project has completely changed the dark gloomy 1950s platforms into light, open, friendly spaces.

The project was split into four phases so the station could remain fully operational throughout the project:

Phase 1 Platforms 1b, 2b and 3b

Phase 2 Platforms 4b and 6b and the installing of lifts

Phases 1 &2 were completed at Christmas 2008.

Phase 3 Platforms 4a, 5 and 6a

Phase 3 was completed on time on the 1st May

Phase 4 will completely renew platforms 1a, 2a and 3a. Network Rail is currently in the demolition phase where we are using a large crane to demolish the old canopies over the platforms and the new ones will be lifted into place. The tired platform surfaces will then be replaced with new materials and new stairs will be put in to access platforms 4a and 5.

The new platforms should be ready for use and the project complete at the end of September 2009. The station will be much more user friendly for disabled passengers and those with heavy luggage. The open design means that there is more space for passengers which will make it much easier to catch a train.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
