DERBY GETS THE NO MESSIN'! MESSAGE

Region & Route:

As the school holidays approach and children plan how to fill their spare time, Network Rail's Route Crime Education Team has been busy spreading the message to local schools and youth groups about the dangers of messing about on the railway.

The team have already visited a large number of schools in the Derby area and Ryan O'Leary, a boy aged 10 from Draycott Primary School in Derbyshire won an MP4 player through a competition on the No Messin'! website and happily told us that he was "very excited at winning the competition on the No Messin'! website" Ian Chapman, Network Rail's Head of Route Crime Education said: "During the school holidays we see an increase in trespass and vandalism on the railway. The No Messin'! campaign aims to get across to young people that the railway is not a playground and give them something else to do in their spare time. No Messin'! Live will give children the opportunity to see it for real when it hits the Moorways Centre in Derby on 13 and 14 August."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
