COUNTDOWN TO £3 MILLION RAILWAY RENEWAL

Region & Route:
Work on a £3 million investment to renew the railway line between Beverley and Driffield begins in two weeks. The line between Beverley and Driffield will be closed from Saturday 20 November until Sunday 28 November (inclusive), re-opening on Monday 29 November.  Graham Botham, Route Director, Network Rail said: “When this work is complete, trains will be able to travel more quickly on this stretch of track, so rail passengers should find their journeys are quicker and more reliable.  “The new track will also mean smoother train journeys – and therefore less noise for the people who live near the railway. During the track renewal work, engineers will work around the clock to renew five miles of railway, laying:
  • 11,280 steel sleepers
  • 120 concrete sleepers
  • 10,075 tonnes of ballast
Dyan Crowther, Arriva Trains Northern’s Managing Director, said: “This planned engineering work by Network Rail is essential to the development and long-term improvement of the line. “We would like to reassure our customers that we are working closely with Network Rail and we have organised bus replacement services to ensure that our customers are able to get to their destination whilst the track improvements are carried out.” During the track renewal work a bus replacement service will operate between Beverley and Bridlington.  Between Hull and Beverley trains will generally run at their normal times.  Passengers are advised to check travel times with National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
