CONSULTANTS APPOINTED TO NEW STREET STATION PROJECT

Region & Route:

Network Rail has appointed project management and cost consultant Faithful & Gould to provide quantity-surveying services for the design development phase of works for the £350m redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station. The work is being delivered by Network Rail and funded by a multi-agency group of Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council, Centro and the Strategic Rail Authority. Construction is due to start in 2007 and will comprise major improvements to station facilities plus the development of the Pallasades shopping centre. WSP Group was recently appointed to undertake the study with architects John McAslan & Partners and Chapman Taylor as part of the team. Simon Raine, director at the Faithful & Gould office in central Birmingham, said: "The redevelopment of New Street station and its associated retail centre is one of the most important projects to be undertaken in Birmingham this decade and we are delighted to have been appointed to play a role in making it happen." Faithful & Gould, which is based in the Axis building in Holliday Street in the centre of Birmingham, has been involved in many landmark projects in the region, including award winning schemes such as Brindleyplace, Selfridges, Centro extension to the Midland Metro, Trent Valley 4 Tracking, The Mailbox, No1 Colmore Square, Pricewaterhousecoopers offices and Birmingham Airport. In the public sector, appointments include various roles on the Building Schools for the Future Programme to rebuild and refurbish secondary schools and prestigious projects for local universities.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
