COMBERFORD RESIDENTS SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES

Region & Route:

Spring has truly arrived in Comberford this week with the planting of four oak trees courtesy of Network Rail. The four metre-high oaks have been planted in full view of the village following consultation with the local community and Lichfield District Council. As part of the project to improve the railway through the Trent Valley, Network Rail is constructing a new rail bridge over the River Tame at Comberford. To prepare the area ready for the construction work to start, four mature trees had to be removed, two of which were badly diseased. Keith Riley, Senior Programme Manager for Network Rail said; “We are committed to restoring land to its original state when construction work is complete, so it’s even more rewarding to be able to replace these trees before the end of the project. We have spoken to local people to make sure the replanting was done to their satisfaction.” Mrs Cliffe and her daughter Joanne who are residents in Comberford village said they were delighted with the efforts Network Rail had gone to in planting the oak trees to replace those removed during construction. Joanne said; “The planting of these four semi-mature trees will benefit future generations living in the village.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
