CHRIS GRAYLING SEES RAIL INTEGRATION IN ACTION

Region & Route:
Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling MP, was given a guided tour of the new railway integrated control centre (ICC) in York during a visit on 18 September. The centre, which has been operational since the summer of 2006, brings Network Rail people and train operating controllers together under one roof.  This allows them to work closely, monitoring the network and quickly resolving incidents. Teams from Network Rail, GNER and Northern Rail are already located in the building and the First TransPennine Express team will be moving in soon. Under the new arrangements the track and train operators adopt common processes under the command of a single decision-maker, the Current Operations Manager - colloquially known as the 'fat controller' who is an employee of Network Rail. Dyan Crowther, Route Director for Network Rail in the North East said: “We were delighted to show Mr Grayling around the centre and demonstrate the ways in which we work closely with the train operating companies, reducing delays and improving the service for passengers.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
