Meena Cook, from Network Rail’s station retail team, said: “We are all delighted to be taking part in this event to mark the first Christmas at the new Birmingham New Street station and our people have really been getting into the spirit of the occasion. It’s great that we’re partnering the event with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Macmillan, two charities of significance to the staff working on the station redevelopment, and we’re all looking forward to taking part.”

Emma Bryant, corporate partnerships manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, commented: “Every year there are over 240,000 patient visits to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Many of those children and young people face incredibly difficult circumstances and their stories of courage, determination and hope are truly amazing. Our medical and nursing teams provide the best possible treatment and world-class care, but we want to do so much more to improve the environment for our children, young people and their families whilst they are here.

“We’re delighted to have been chosen by staff at New Street station as the local charity to benefit from the proceeds from this great event and wish them all a very Merry Christmas!”

Emily Morgan, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in south Birmingham, added: “Thank you to everyone at Network Rail for supporting us this Christmas. Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face and no one should face it alone, particularly at this time of year. Supporting the wrap and go event will make a big difference to our work and you’ll get some beautifully wrapped presents too!”

The Charity Wrap and Go stand will be located in the main station concourse, opposite the ticket office and next to the Christmas tree on the 12 & 13 December then 16-20 December between 12.30-6.30pm. The redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station completes in full in 2015.

Notes to editors

The redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station and creation of Grand Central Birmingham shopping centre is backed by Birmingham City Council, Network Rail, Department for Transport, Centro, European Development Fund and Advantage West Midlands.

Network Rail is delivering the project alongside its delivery partner Mace and delivers:

Space to accommodate passenger growth: the new concourse will be three and a half times bigger than at present and will have natural light flood throughout the giant atrium.

Better access for all: over 30 new escalators and 15 new public lifts will make it much easier to travel between the platforms and the concourse above.

Cutting edge design: a stunning new station façade will create a new landmark building in the heart of Birmingham.

The station will remain open throughout the redevelopment. The first half of the new station concourse opened to passengers in April 2013. Work has now started to redevelop the old station and Pallasades shopping centre above into Grand Central. The project completes in 2015.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
