CAR PARK EXPANSION WORK STARTS SOON
- Region & Route:
Work to increase the number of parking spaces at Carlisle station is expected to start by the end of the month (May). Network Rail has appointed Kier Construction to carry out the work as part of a £90m project to improve car parks at most of the Virgin managed stations on the west coast main line.
The new car park will have 194 spaces, 46 more than now.
David Golding, Network Rail's route enhancements manager said: "More passengers are travelling by train than ever before and the demand for rail travel is set to continue to rise. We predict that a large proportion of these extra passengers will drive to the station, so we have to addres that growth.”
As well as the extra spaces, Blue Badge spaces will be retained along with the cycle lock-up boxes and spaces for motorbikes.
The car park surface will be made good, and the lighting and CCTV will be upgraded so the new facility can be reassessed to maintain its ‘Park Mark’ standard.
The existing pay and display machines will be removed to help create the extra spaces. Pay on Foot machines will be conveniently located within the station buildings and the new car park is expected to be open by late summer.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
