CAR PARK EXPANSION WORK STARTS

Region & Route:

Work to increase the number of parking spaces at Lancaster station has started after Network Rail appointed Kier Construction to carry out the work as part of a £90m project to improve car parks at most of the Virgin managed stations on the west coast main line.

The new car park will have 147 spaces, 27 more than now. To create the extra spaces, the existing car par will be extended at both ends, motorbike spaces relocated and planting beds reduced.

Lighting columns will also be relocated and the car park will have CCTV to bring it up to ‘Park Mark’ standards.

David Golding, Network Rail's route enhancements manager said: "More passengers are travelling by train than ever before and the demand for rail travel is set to continue to rise. We predict that many of these extra passengers will drive to the station, so we have to address that growth.”

There will be about seven spaces for holders of Blue Badges in the new facility, which is expected to be open in the next couple of months.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
