Cadoxton residents and passengers thanked as major milestone reached in station access improvement project

Network Rail has thanked the local community and passengers of Cadoxton station for their patience, as the project to improve access at the station has reached a major milestone.

Over four weekends in August and September, Network Rail engineers and their principal contractor, Alun Griffiths, worked around the clock to successfully lift the new footbridge, lift towers and support columns into position at Cadoxton station.

New time-lapse footage released today shows the lift columns being lifted into place by a large crane, which was located within the station car park each weekend.

Rhys Howells, scheme project manager at Network Rail said:

“We would like to thank passengers and the local community for their patience throughout these essential works.

“Once complete, the new footbridge and lifts will benefit those with reduced mobility as well as passengers with children, heavy luggage or shopping.”

James Price, CEO at Transport for Wales said:

“It’s great to see work progressing through the ‘Access for All’ programme. In addition to this, Transport for Wales are investing £194 million in station improvements throughout our Wales and Borders network, including the building of at least five new stations. We will spend £15 million on making our stations more accessible, which will further improve the customer experience and help us create a transport network that people can be proud of.” 

Further night-time and weekend work is expected to take place until mid-November.

The work is part of the £3 million ‘Access for All’ project, funded by the Department for Transport, with match funding from Welsh Government. The funding is used to create an obstacle free, accessible route from the station entrance to the platform. Barry station is set to benefit from this funding next year.
