BUXTON RAIL LINE TO GET £1 MILLION

Passengers on the Buxton line will benefit from smoother and quieter journeys from the end of the month after Network Rail has completed track renewals in the Middlewood area. The rail infrastructure owner is investing almost £1 million replacing approximately 2,400 yards of jointed track with continuously welded rail. Jo Kaye, area general manager for Network Rail, said: “This is a massive investment in the Middlewood area and forms part of the commitment we have given to improve performance on the Buxton line and deliver the railway passengers expect and deserve. “This scheme will have long-term benefits for passengers and the industry alike. Passengers will notice a smoother, quieter ride as jointed track is replaced with continuous lengths of rail, there will be less wear and tear on the trains and the new track will be less susceptible to defects and failures.” The track renewal will pave the way for more reliable train services, by removing speed restrictions that have contributed to poor performance on the line. The restrictions were imposed due to the combined effects of heavy freight traffic and passenger trains that have led to the deterioration of the track. During the work, nearly three quarters of a mile of track and associated sleepers will be replaced and trackside drainage will be improved. Work will start at 10 pm on Friday 20 October and is due to be completed in time for train services to resume on Monday 30 October. During that time train operator Northern will be operating a rail replacement service between Buxton and Hazel Grove.
