BIRMINGHAM TO DERBY POSSESSIONS

Region & Route:

From May to July 2004, Network Rail will be carrying out essential renewal work over a series of weekend possessions on a 15-mile stretch of railway between Birmingham and Derby. Remedial work to this section of railway, consisting of alignment tamping and stoneblowing, was carried out in 2003 as part of the Cross Country Route Modernisation project. Following track quality testing it has been determined that additional renewal work will need to take place to ensure the line speed can be maintained at 125mph on a permanent basis. These works are part of the ongoing programme of planned renewals that will be delivered, over the next five years, to enable this route to sustain the 125 mph line speeds for the Virgin Cross Country fleet. The second part of this year’s (2004/5) planned renewals will take place in January 2005. Engineering work cannot take place between July 2004 and January 2005 due to diversions on the route as a result of West Coast Route Modernisation project work. Network Rail is working with its passenger train and freight customers to enable them to undertake amended train working arrangements during this period and minimise disruption for the rail traveller.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
