BIG LIFT FOR BOLTON BRIDGE WORKS

Region & Route:
Major work on a replacement railway bridge at Great Moor Street in Bolton saw a huge lifting operation take place as 40 concrete beams were lowered into position at the site. An 800 tonne crane was needed to lift the beams into position during the latest phase of work, which took place during the Bank Holiday weekend. (Apr 30 & May 1) Peter Strachan, Network Rail Route Director, said: “The work is part of a continued nationwide programme to strengthen and replace highway bridges. The lifting phase was a crucial part of the work, which we expect to finish by the end of July.” The concrete beams were cast in Northern Ireland and transported by ferry and road to Bolton in time for the scheduled lifting work, which was part of a £2m reconstruction of the bridge. Network Rail has managed the project, with contractor Galliford Try carrying out the works. Funding has come from Bolton Council, with the authority’s engineers also involved in the design of the scheme.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
