BEVERLEY STATION - WORK BEGINS

Region & Route:
The 550,000 passengers who use Beverley Station in East Riding each year are set to benefit from improvement works - starting with new lighting. The existing lighting in the Grade 2 listed building was installed more than 30 years ago and is in need of replacement, especially to help the visually impaired to navigate the station. Improvements to the lighting outside the train shed, and to the footbridge, will be made as well as inside.  An additional benefit of this work will be to improve the quality of images recorded by the CCTV system. The scheme, which will cost around £157,000, is scheduled to start on 13 November and should be complete in January 2007.  Once Network Rail engineers have finished the lighting work they will start work to improve the footbridge.  The council and Network Rail will also provide and install new, secure and undercover cycle parking facilities, for up to 50 cycles. East Riding of Yorkshire Council secured the funding through a successful bid for central government’s ‘Access For All’ small schemes funding.  Additional funds were provided by Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust Neil Henry, Network Rail’s Area General Manager said: “We have been looking to improve facilities at Beverley station for some time and through the partnership approach and Access for All that we have been able to move this scheme forward.  This scheme will bring real benefits to all who use the station.” Ian Burnett, transport policy team leader for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The council has a key role to play in improving accessibility to rail stations within the East Riding, and is committed to working with the rail industry, community rail partnerships and other stakeholders to deliver these improvements. “The Hull to Scarborough rail line plays an important role in the local economy, and Beverley Station is a key gateway to the busy, historic market town.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
