BETTER RAIL SERVICES FOR SCARBOROUGH
- Region & Route:
Passengers travelling between Seamer and Scarborough will have smoother and more reliable journeys after Network Rail completes several rail improvement works.
Work to upgrade the railway around Scarborough began in January 2010. The complex job includes the complete renewal of track, drainage and signalling within the station approach area.
Warrick Dent, area general manager for Network Rail, said: “This is good news for Yorkshire passengers and shows Network Rail’s commitment to improving the regions railway. It is a complex project that will deliver real benefits for passengers in terms of reliability and the quality of ride. We continue to work closely with the council to minimise the impact of the work.
“We have planned other works with this resignalling to reduce disruption to passengers and help us to make savings, delivering value.”
Between January and October 2010 the signalling works, which are worth around £20m, are being carried out overnight when trains do not run to minimise impact upon the travelling public. However, essential works will affect trains into and out of Scarborough between 6 October and 1 November.
Around £9m additional investment will be carried out at the same time as the disruptive signalling works. This is made up of four track jobs which will give passengers a smoother ride, and work on the Huttons Ambo River Bridge to make sure it is fit for purpose for many years to come.
Notes to editors
The listed signal box at Falsgrave will be closed following the works. A new user for it is being actively sought.
The signalling works will see control of the signalling system fully transferred to Seamer signalling box (currently split between Falsgrave and Seamer) and a new track layout installed to improve timetable flexibility and give better access for refuelling steam trains
Full details of replacement services will be available from First TransPennine Express or National Rail Enquiries.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
