ATHERSTONE STATION TO BECOME MORE ACCESSIBLE

From spring 2011, passengers travelling through Atherstone station will be greeted with a more accessible and brighter station. Next month, Network Rail will be hosting a public drop-in session to provide neighbours and users of the station with the opportunity to talk to us about the essential improvement work being carried out.

Network Rail is holding a public road show at Atherstone Memorial Hall on Thursday 3 February 2011 between 3pm-7pm to introduce plans for the station. Key project people from Network Rail will be available to answer any questions or discuss any issues about the improvement works.

Patrick Elson, scheme project manager at Network Rail said: ”Once completed these essential improvement works at the station will bring great benefits to passengers, particularly those who require step-free access.

“With work beginning in the next few weeks we thought it would be a great opportunity to get out into the community surrounding the station and give people the chance to direct any questions they have about the project to us, face-to-face.”

Between February and May 2011, an access point will be created to the rear of platform 1 and will provide car parking, a drop-off point and direct pedestrian access to the platform. The footbridge which has suffered deterioration and is currently closed will also be permanently removed.

During the works, access to and between platforms will be via the underpass situated on Old Watling Street which will also be upgraded as part of the scheme. The improvements will include new lighting and upgrade works to the road surface and pathway.
