ANLABY ROAD BRIDGE GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Region & Route:
The bridge that carries the railway over Anlaby Road in Hull is getting a new lease of life thanks to a £700,000 investment by Network Rail. The bridge was originally built in 1883 and the past 121 years have taken their toll on the structure.  Network Rail will carry out repairs to the steel work including the main girders, cross girders and rail bearers.  Engineers will also use 74 grout columns to underpin the bridge abutments to counteract the poor ground condition.  Graham Botham, Route Director, Network Rail said: “We are committed to making sure Britain’s rail network, including bridges like this one in Hull, is safe and reliable.  This large investment, and extensive strengthening work, will bring long-term benefits to people using the roads and railway in Hull. To allow the work to take place it will be necessary to close Anlaby Road between the junctions with North Road and the A1105 from the following dates:
  • Monday 25 October to Monday 20 December 2004 (inclusive)
  • Monday 3 January to 18 March 2005 (inclusive)
Traffic will be diverted via North Road and the A1105

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
