A641 Bradford Road / Northgate to be temporarily closed as TRU completes major upgrades in Huddersfield
As upgrades progress in Huddersfield as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), the A641 Bradford Road / Northgate will be closed for six weekends at the start of 2025.
Road users are being reminded to plan their journeys ahead of time, as the A641 Bradford Road / Northgate is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic over the following dates:
· From 22:00 on Thursday 2 January to 05:00 on Monday 6 January 2025
· From 22:00 on Thursday 9 January to 05:00 on Monday 13 January 2025
· From 22:00 on Friday 17 January to 05:00 on Monday 20 January 2025
· From 22:00 on Friday 24 January to 05:00 on Monday 27 January 2025
· From 22:00 on Friday 31 January to 05:00 on Monday 3 February 2025
· From 22:00 on Friday 7 February to 05:00 on Monday 10 February 2025
Over these weekends, as well as on Tuesday 17 and 18 December 2024, there will also be short, intermittent road closures on New North Road / Castlegate / Green Street.
Signposted diversions will be established along roads with clear directions of the best routes to take.
Anyone who uses this route is encouraged to check roadworks.org for the latest information and the most up to date diversionary routes.
During this period, work will be undertaken to strengthen Huddersfield viaduct in advance of new track being installed on the structure.
The road closures provide access for the team to transport and install a pre-cast concrete beam onto the viaduct, as well as to complete ground excavations, concrete pouring and masonry repairs.
Gareth Hope, Sponsor for TRU, said:
“We’d like to thank the local community in Huddersfield for bearing with us while we close the A641 to complete strengthening works to Huddersfield viaduct.
“The work is required to enable us to install new track over the structure and through Huddersfield station. This will ultimately provide more capacity for faster and more reliable trains to run along the Transpennine line, providing a better experience for passengers who travel along this route.
“We understand that closing roads such as the A641 is inconvenient and so we appreciate public’s patience and support as the work takes place.”
As part of TRU, Huddersfield station is being remodelled to enable faster, longer and more frequent trains to run along the route between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
