Region & Route:

Passengers will soon be enjoying a more pleasant environment at Stamford as Network Rail starts a £500,000 programme to clean up the town’s historic station. The makeover of the Grade 2 listed station includes refurbishing the footbridge, improved lighting and a general clean up of the station buildings and platform canopies. Mark Tarry, Network Rail Area General Manager East Midlands said: “Network Rail is committed to providing the best possible environment for passengers and this project will improve the appearance of this historic station for many years to come.” Central Trains, which manages the station, also recently began improvement works, including a new larger ticket window with split counter for disabled access, a sympathetic refurbishment of the ticket office and mahogany panelling in the booking hall. Mike Haigh, Business Development Director at Central Trains, said: "We’re sure that passengers that use Stamford Station will have noticed the refurbishment and loving restoration of some of the features from the Edwardian period and beforehand. "We are committed to making facilities better for our passengers right up to end of the Central Trains’ franchise in November." The station will remain open for passengers throughout the project and a temporary footbridge will be built to allow passengers access to both platforms while the existing footbridge is refurbished. The project is due to be completed by early December.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
