£2.5 MILLION OF IMPROVEMENTS AT DONCASTER STATION

Region & Route:
Passengers using Doncaster station are set to benefit after £2.5 million of improvements were made over Christmas. Rail users also had the unusual chance of seeing all the action from the platforms. Network Rail replaced six sets of points, known as ‘Sheffield Ladder’ at the station.  The points control the movement of trains onto the Sheffield branch line.  Work started on Christmas Eve and took place around the clock finishing on New Year’s Eve.  Up to 90 workers were on site at any time yet there was minimal disruption to train services.  Dyan Crowther, Route Director, Network Rail said: “Passengers using the Doncaster to Sheffield route will see improved reliability and performance as a result of this work.  “With the progress of the new transport interchange, due to open in June and work to improve access at the station itself we are proud to play our part in ensuring visitors have a first class impression of Doncaster.” Network Rail maximised the access gained to the railway due to no trains running on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Engineers also replaced eight pairs of waybeams on a bridge north of Doncaster Station which carries the East Coast main line over the River Don.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
