£1.3 MILLION INVESTMENT IN ROTHERHAM BRIDGE

Region & Route:
Rail passengers are set to benefit from a faster service as Network Rail replaces a rail bridge in Rawmarsh, Rotherham. The structure, which crosses Kilnhurst Road, has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement. In order to complete these vital works a full road closure will be in place over the weekend of 14/15 April. Trains on the Pontefract line between Rotherham Masborough and Swinton stations will also be affected. Dyan Crowther, Route Director for Network Rail said: "This work is a vital part of our commitment to investing in the railways and will allow us to increase train speeds helping to make services more punctual in the area. We are not only replacing the bridge but also renewing the track and signalling systems - during the main works more than 100 people will be working on this project. "We have worked closely with the council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to minimise the impact caused by this work and apologise to anyone who is inconvenienced by them." A minibus will be provided during the main road closure to transport passengers from one side of the bridge to the other. South Yorkshire PTE will also be providing a special bus service in Kilnhurst and Rawmarsh.

Notes to editors

Kilnhurst Road will be closed from midnight on Friday 13 April to 6am Monday 16 April to allow the bridge to be replaced. The road is also closed from midnight to 7am on SUNDAYS ONLY from 25 March to 13 May.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
