£11m INVESTMENT ON LEEDS - YORK RAIL LINE
- Region & Route:
Network Rail is investing £11m on new track and signals north of Church Fenton station on the Leeds to York line.
The planned rail improvement work will start on Boxing Day and will continue for four weekends. It will involve the introduction of new, high speed components which will allow trains to cross from line to line at higher speed, giving a smoother ride to passengers. The works, which will be complete following a second phase in Spring 2009, will also increase the number of trains able to use the junction, giving greater flexibility for train services.
Warrick Dent, area general manager for Network Rail, said: "We are taking the opportunity of the renewal of track in this area to upgrade the components and redesign part of the track layout in order to allow faster, more flexible working."
Alternative services will be in place for passengers using Northern Rail, First TransPennine Express and CrossCountry services between Leeds and York from 26 December to start of service on Monday 29 December and on the weekends of 3/4 10/11, 17/18 and 24/25 January 2009. There will also be finishing works on the weekend of 11/12 April. Further information is available from the train operator or National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
