£11 MILLION FACE LIFT FOR WOLVERHAMPTON STATION

Wolverhampton Station will be shouting about its new look in Autumn 2004. Not only will the station have a new platform it is also gaining a slick glass footbridge. Work has started in preparation for major work over the Christmas period. During this time the platform and piling work will commence and the footbridge steps and lift structures will be constructed. Passengers can expect a new waiting room, a small buffet unit, and a passenger lounge with toilets. In spring 2004 the new glass and steel footbridge spans will be lifted into place. The project will be completed in autumn 2004. The new footbridge will not only provide access to all the current platforms and the new platform, but it will also allow disabled access to all the platforms for the first time. Initiated by Midlands Region as part of the SRA’s West Midlands Strategy, the £11 million project is now being implemented through the West Coast upgrade works in time for the introduction of the winter 2004 timetable. The new platform will cater for trains up to 10-car length and will be built opposite the existing platform 3. -more- Wolverhampton- 2 Robbie Burns, Midland Regional Director commented: “ We are delighted to announce the start of works to improve Wolverhampton station. In addition to the cosmetic changes, rail travellers will also benefit from increased platform capacity and the operational flexibility that the new platform will bring.” Coaches will be used on 29 December to replace trains.
