Passengers travelling throughout South Wales during weekends in October are being advised to check before they travel as Network Rail carries out essential work to improve the reliability of services, as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan.

A system which will make the railway safer for level crossing users is to be rolled out to three level crossings across Anglia from today (Friday 14 October) as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

• Network Rail’s Advanced Apprenticeship scheme to expand by 50 per cent in 2017
• 140 new apprenticeships to be made available across the country in March 2017. Of these, 16 will be to the south and west of London, located across Clapham, Salisbury, Eastleigh and Wimbledon
• Scheme expanded to two apprentice intakes each year in March and September

Residents in Cornwall will be able to enjoy the benefits of an upgrade to the Saveock bridge in Chacewater from Friday.

• The latest stage in improvements to the railway in the Bromsgrove area
• Work will allow line between Bromsgrove and Birmingham to be electrified
• Upgraded signalling will help make services to and from the town more reliable
• To allow the work to be completed the line will be closed for 12 days
• Buses will replace trains serving Bromsgrove station
• Trains between Birmingham, Hereford, south Wales and the South West will be subject to an amended timetable

Residents in Bloxwich are invited to two drop-in events to hear more information on the proposed closure of a level crossing in the town.

Network Rail is saving £9.5m of taxpayers' money by using an innovative scaffolding method to upgrade the Victorian railway tunnel leading to Liverpool Central station.

The ScotRail Alliance is today urging people whose travel plans will take them through the central belt to check their journey before setting off, as a number of timetable alterations come into force on Saturday 22 October.
