Jacky Duffin Wood level crossing in Carlton, North Yorkshire, is the first in the Britain to link two safety measures together, following a £30,000 investment.

More than 200 residents took the chance to take a behind-the-scenes peek at the workings of Helpston signal box, after the signallers there organised a number of open days to promote level crossing safety.

• Funding will be used to clear lineside vegetation, reducing the number of leaves that fall on the line
• Nine specialist track cleaning trains will be deployed every day between October and December
• South Western Railway drivers are taking part in autumn training whilst an amended timetable is in operation from October 6 to December 14

Passengers in the North West are being warned about a five-day closure of the railway in November to renew a bridge over the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Network Rail engineers will be delivering upgrade and refurbishment works on the West Highland Line from this weekend.

• Lime Street and Edge Hill stations will be closed on 2-3 November
• Passengers can still travel to/from central Liverpool on rail replacement buses or Merseyrail network
• 21^st century signalling upgrade will mean more reliable journeys for passengers

A Network Rail signaller has been nominated for a Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award after raising more than £40,000 for Dementia UK.

A Grade II listed former luggage bridge is being lovingly restored for passengers at Worcester Shrub Hill station.
