Passengers will benefit from a better, more reliable railway in 2023 thanks to upgrade and maintenance work taking place this Christmas and New Year.

While people across the country enjoy well-earned time off and tuck into some tasty treats this Christmas, hundreds of Network Rail Anglia engineers will be out in force upgrading the region’s railway.

• Vast majority of the rail network – more than 95% – will be open for business as usual for passengers travelling by train over the festive period
• Most of the £120m upgrade work planned for when passenger trains don't run – such as on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and overnight – to keep passengers moving over the holidays.
• Some routes will be affected by essential work, passengers advised to plan journeys in advance

A huge investment to bring lifts to Royston station and make it more accessible for passengers is now under way.

A major six-month renovation of Salford Central station upgrading platform heights, roof canopies, railway track and its signalling system will take place in the New Year.

High winds and heavy rain are set to hit the east of Scotland over the next 48 hours and speed restrictions will be imposed on sections of the railway.

Passenger services between Leicester and Peterborough will resume on Wednesday 23 November, after a bridge strike in Ketton, Rutland caused extensive damage, leading to the closure of the line.  

Network Rail’s Roskear signal box in Camborne, Cornwall, recently welcomed a special visitor – 16-year-old William Beynon from Hayle, who has recently celebrated being given the all-clear from cancer.
