Network Rail continues its support for the prestigious Landscape Photographer of the Year competition with the opening of an exhibition of the best entries from 2016 launching at London Waterloo station this evening (Monday 21 November).

More than 60 winning and selected images from this year’s competition will feature in the free exhibition, alongside a digital display of all 153 images commended by the judges from the many thousands of entries. Station users will be able to enjoy photographs ranging from scenic views of Cumbrian wilderness, through to atmospheric shots of iconic structures such as the Forth Bridge.

The exhibition includes the 2016 winner of the Network Rail ‘Lines in the Landscape’ award, which aims to find the photography that best captures the spirit of today's railway as it relates to the landscape around it.  Photographed by Francis Taylor, the winning image is a beautifully composed shot of sunshine breaking through clouds over the Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire.

Commenting on his win, Francis Taylor, said:

"I am absolutely thrilled to have won this year’s Network Rail Award.  As a passionate landscape photographer it has been my long standing goal to be featured in this prestigious competition, so to win a category feels amazing!  To have my image of the viaduct chosen as the category winner is a real honour, as it is a location that has always inspired me.  The sheer scale of the construction, the remarkable work that went into its completion and the stunning setting make this a winning location for me.”

The Landscape Photographer of the Year is an annual competition for both amateur and professional photographers and offers a top prize of £10,000. Now in its 10th year, the competition was founded by renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite and aims to highlight the very best imagery of Britain’s beautiful rural and urban scenery.

David Biggs, managing director of Network Rail Property, said:

“As part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, we’re committed to making our stations exceptional places to visit and so we’re delighted to host this exhibition of some of the most stunning images of Britain’s scenery in many of our biggest and busiest railway stations. We hope that the millions of visitors and passengers who use them will enjoy and be inspired by the breath-taking images on show.

After its residency at London Waterloo station, the free exhibition will tour the UK, visiting the following Network Rail stations:

  1. London Bridge: 20 February to 11 March
  2. Glasgow Central: 13 March – 25 March
  3. Liverpool Lime St: 27 March – 8 April

ABOUT NETWORK RAIL

Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain’s railway – the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts, and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which we also run). In partnership with train operators we help people take more than 1.6bn journeys by rail every year - double the number of 1996 - and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. We’re investing £38bn in the railway by 2019 to deliver more frequent, more reliable, safer services and brighter and better stations.

All profits from Network Rail’s commercial activities are reinvested back into the railway.

About the Railway Upgrade Plan

The Railway Upgrade Plan is Network Rail's investment plan for Britain's railways. It makes up two-thirds of Network Rail's £40bn spending priorities for the five years to 2019 and represents the biggest sustained programme of rail modernisation since the Victoria era. It is designed to provide more capacity, relieve crowding and respond to the tremendous growth Britain's railways continue to experience; passenger numbers have doubled in the past 20 years and are set to double again over the next 25 years - so we need to continue to invest in building a bigger, better railway. For passengers, that means:

  • longer, faster more frequent trains;
  • better, more reliable infrastructure; and
  • better facilities for passengers, especially at stations.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
