Upgrade work means Moss Road and Fenwick Lane level crossings will close for nine days

Region & Route:

Work to upgrade Moss Road and Fenwick Lane level crossings to the most modern standards starts this weekend.

The crossings will be closed between Saturday 18 April 2015 at 06:00 and Sunday 26 April 2015 at 19:00. A diversionary route will be in force and will be fully signposted, and a 24-hour mini bus service will be on standby for pedestrians and cyclists if required throughout the closure. Access for horse riders will not be available except between Saturday 18 April at 06:00 until Sunday 19 April at 12:00.

Access for emergency vehicles on an emergency call will be made available via Hayworth level crossing during the closure of Moss Road level crossing.

Paul Rutter, area director for Network Rail, said: "The equipment at these two level crossings needs to be renewed in order to keep them reliable and prevent failures which could cause significant disruption to both rail and road traffic. In order to complete the work safely it is essential that we close the crossings for nine days which will result in diversions around both crossings. We have worked hard to keep any disruption caused by the closures is kept to a minimum and I would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience as we complete this vital upgrade.”

Peter Dale, Doncaster Council’s director of regeneration and environment, said: “We are coordinating essential re-surfacing works to tie in with Network Rail’s crossing renewal work to minimise disruption in the future. These works will significantly improve the experience for road users."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
