Stunning new timelapse shows the extent of upgrade work in the Severn Tunnel

Stunning new timelapse captures the extent of the upgrade work completed by Network Rail’s ‘orange army’ to prepare the Severn Tunnel for electrification.
The footage features the installation of over eight miles of conductor rail in the 130-year-old tunnel which took place the six week closure (12 September to 21 October ) as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan to provide a bigger and better railway for passengers.

An extensive amount of work was also completed to lower the track in the Patchway Tunnels in South to Gloucestershire to accommodate the electrification equipment that will power the new fleet of electric trains, which will result in more seats, faster and more reliable journeys for passengers.
The Severn Tunnel reopened to rail passengers on Saturday, 22 October following the completion this iconic milestone in the project to deliver electric trains for passengers in South Wales.
