Road changes to support development of new High Street rail bridge

Region & Route:

People in Lincoln are being advised to double-check their journey plans as new traffic restrictions come into place from 9 March.

The footpath on west side of High Street will be fenced off outside number 179 as Network Rail begins demolition work required to build a new footbridge over the level crossing. In order to provide a safe walking route for the hundreds of pedestrians which use High Street, northbound road traffic will be diverted.

Phil Verster, Route Managing Director for Network Rail, said: “This is a very important project that will improve safety at the level crossing whilst at the same time reducing the delays it causes to pedestrians and cyclists in Lincoln. It is encouraging that our project team will soon be working to demolish part of the building and to make a visible difference on site.

“The fact that we are working on such a busy road means that some disruption is inevitable. We have worked carefully with Lincolnshire Country Council to minimise the impact of the work whilst still keeping everyone safe. I thank the people of Lincoln for their patience.”

The project to build a new footbridge over High Street level crossing will mean pedestrians and cyclists can cross the railway 24-hours-a-day, and there will be no need to wait at the level crossing barriers. The work will see a lift provided at each side of the bridge, capable of carrying mobility scooters and pushchairs. 179 High Street will also be further redeveloped for reuse after the bridge is constructed.

To allow enabling works for the road and pedestrian diversions required for this work, High Street will be closed to all traffic for up to 48 hours over the weekend of 7 and 8 March. This will allow Lincolnshire County Council to complete significant changes to traffic signals and road markings as well as the temporary re-configuration of the junctions on Wigford Way and St Mark Street. This closure is likely to come into effect at around 8pm on Saturday and run through Sunday.

The servicing of and deliveries arrangements to business premises will be maintained throughout the work.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
