Crossrail upgrades continue this spring bank holiday in east London

Region & Route:
| Southern

Vital upgrades to the railway will be carried this Bank Holiday weekend in east London, as engineers continue to prepare the line between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield for future Crossrail services.

On Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May, engineers will be working on a new bridge being built at Pudding Mill Lane, near Stratford.

This means passenger services operated by Abellio Greater Anglia will start and terminate at Stratford, and tickets will be accepted on the Central Line between Stratford and Liverpool Street in both directions.

Richard Schofield, Network Rail route managing director, said: “When complete, Crossrail will transform services with new and more frequent trains and enable passengers to make journeys to parts of the City, West End and west London without the need to change trains.

“We try our best to minimise the impact on passengers and do most of the work behind the scenes, but there are big pieces of work that can only be completed when the railway is clear of trains. We would like to thank passengers in advance for bearing with us.”

Work will also be carried out at these locations in the east of England:

Between Letchworth Garden City and Royston: On Sunday 24 May, Great Northern will run an amended service between Royston and Cambridge / Kings Lynn. Buses will replace trains between Letchworth Garden City and Royston as engineers upgrade overhead power lines.

Between Colchester and Witham: On Sunday May 24, buses will replace trains between Colchester and Witham in both directions until approximately 10:40am as Network Rail continues to upgrade the London to Norwich line.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
