Network Rail Wales route operates and maintains 923 miles of track across Wales and the border counties of England. Over 1340 trains run per day connecting towns and cities as well as providing connectivity in more rural areas.

The railway in Wales has been a success story with passenger growth of close to 50% over the last 10 years. With rail travel expected to continue growing significantly over the next 30 years, the number of journeys to and from Cardiff Central station, for example, is forecast to grow from 13 million to 33 million by 2043. The recently published Wales Route Study sets 14 ‘choices for funders’ to help accommodate this rising demand, including plans for a major re-development of Cardiff Central.
