Motorists advised of lane closure as New Street station development nears completion

Motorists are advised that Hill Street in the city centre will be operating a one way system from Sunday 17 May to allow for essential highways work as part of the final stages of the Birmingham New Street station redevelopment.

The road will be closed to traffic travelling from the Navigation Street junction to Hinckley Street until the station opens in September. The road will remain open to traffic travelling in the opposite direction and a signed diversion, via Suffolk Street Queensway, will be in place to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The closure is needed to complete new granite footways, install new traffic signals and resurface roads around the station and Grand Central shopping destination.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and check local traffic reports before traveling. Dedicated cycling provisions are being put in place to maintain a cycle route via John Bright Street and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout. The closure and diversion will be coordinated with other city centre work in the area.

Chris Montgomery, Network Rail's project director for Birmingham New Street, said: “This is an exciting time for the project as we start to see the finishing touches being put in place before the opening in September, not only inside the building but in the areas surrounding the development. Along with Mace, our delivery partner, we continue to work with local residents and businesses to reduce the impact of any disruption. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and support throughout this work and look forward to being able to share this world class transport, shopping and community hub with the people of Birmingham.”

The completed Birmingham New Street station and Grand Central centre will open in September 2015.
